Highway 1

Will you come down to the highway 1?
Hang for a while honey at the sea
I know you've been underneath that gun
Aw get on down to the highway 1
They got a little place there called Jade Beach
And I know a little place we can stay for free
Nestled way up on a mountain road
I'ma lay my head up on your shoulder
Highway 1 Highway 1 hang by the ocean on the Highway 1
might be the right time sand and sun if you come on down to the Highway 1
What can I say gonna have some foooood
peaches plums and orchids too
You and me got the fresh produce
if you come down to the highway 1
Once I was hangin' by the highway there
I got swirled in the ocean's stare
Round and round with the salt in the air
Then I had a friend lay a hand on my shoulder

Alone

I don't want to move you any which way
The kettle didn't call and the kids didn't stay
The house fell down and the ants moved in
Someone pulled a plug that sank this ship
I don't want to be the one you call
In the middle of the night
Sleeping in your car
Mad at your stomach and mad at me
Scared out of living but afraid to be
Home, alone, in the house at night
I'll leave on, all the lights
I guess I got sad when she left town
But you got mad and pulled a shotgun out
Shooting at the sky, guilty with its clouds
Now you're out with a bucket to catch what falls down
I don't want to give you any advice
But your fear of falling won't stop this flight
Mad at yourself for being mad at me
Scared out of living but afraid to be
Home, alone, in the house at night
I'll leave on, all the lights

Mercy Me

I was born in 1950 without my dad's last name my stepdad roasted in the oil field while I played in the rain
And I was thinking as I's leavin' when I was seventeen about the time I cut my brother left him with that scar you've seen
You see I learned to fight I learned to kill I learned it on my hands
My brother beat me in the morning when I could not get away.
And he'd chased me through the yard and field was the fastest in the land
won the relay in 1968 in Texas, Levelland
Oh oh oooohhhh come on home that old six-shooter is singing son and I'm here all alone
Oh oh oooohhhh mercy me, when you died, I didn't see
And I was cornered in the woodshed, fearing for my life when Pat he took a ball peen hammer and I grabbed a hunting knife and we tore all through that woodshed kicked them tools off the wall
And I knew granddad would beat us, had a system for them all
He took that knife away from me and he tied me to a chair
He pulled a pistol from his pocket laid the barrel in my hair and said
Oh boy you've done it this time you'll never speak again
and then he blasted out that window before he let it sing again
Now here I am at sixty with all that I can bear
my family is living with me and I take some comfort there
but I never learned to drop it aw boy I'm mad as hell
In my dreams I hold a shotgun and I wield it very well
Yeah I'm haunted by my anger and my days fly by like rain
and I can't tell my stories from the hair that clogs my drain
And now I own that pistol that he laid to my head before he turned it on himself and gave the last words that he said

Earthly Angels
04:12
|

Good morning, another day
A month, a year, yeah you’re still here
Still lookin for that fix
That'll make you finally feel sincere
Explain your pain away
Wonder when you might get out a tear
You put it all away
Pack it up along with all your fears
(Chorus)
Don’t chase away
All your earthly angels, you can’t
Think away that feeling anymore
Don’t break it down
The kinda thing is too profound to
Shoo away like a dog back from the door
What good are answers when
You’re mind's already wound itself so tight
That sparkle in her eyes
Is more than just some old refracted light
(Chorus)
Don’t chase away
All your earthly angels, you can’t
Think away that feeling anymore
Don’t understand
Find the beauty where it stands it’s
Made to be beyond your brain to reach
